13-23 July 2023 – Architecture Campus Jakarta, UIDBC and Kura Kura Bali

Seventeen students from the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University embarked on an immersive study excursion to Jakarta and Bali from July 13 to 23, 2025, led by Associate Professors Yu Taofang and Wu Dongfan. The visit marked a continuation of Tsinghua’s long-standing commitment to fostering cross-cultural exchange and advancing dialogue on sustainable city planning, heritage protection, and tourism development across Asia.

The delegation’s journey unfolded across diverse learning environments—from the Architecture Campus in Jakarta to UID Bali Campus and Kura Kura Bali, where they explored Indonesia’s dynamic intersections between tradition and modernity. Through site visits, discussions, and cultural exchanges, students gained first-hand perspectives on how Indonesia balances rapid urban growth with heritage preservation and environmental sustainability.

A highlight of the program was the team’s engagement with key partners including Udayana University, the Confucius School, the Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center (TSEA), and Green School Bali. These meetings opened rich discussions about green architecture, regenerative design, and community-driven planning, reinforcing how architecture can serve as both a cultural bridge and a catalyst for social change.

Beyond academic exchange, the visit carried a forward-looking agenda. The delegation explored collaboration opportunities for hosting an “International Construction Festival” in Bali — an initiative envisioned as a creative platform to showcase innovative architectural practices, celebrate cultural craftsmanship, and promote sustainable development in Southeast Asia.

The group also met with local governments in both Bali and Jakarta, delving into urban-rural integration strategies and regional development frameworks. These dialogues offered valuable insights into Indonesia’s evolving approach to inclusive urbanization — one that seeks harmony between growth, environment, and cultural identity.

By the end of their ten-day journey, the students not only deepened their understanding of Indonesia’s architectural landscape but also strengthened the academic bridge between Tsinghua University and Indonesia’s leading institutions. The excursion embodied a shared vision: that architecture is not only about building structures, but about shaping relationships — between people, places, and the planet.
