10-12 January 2025 – Tsinghua SEA, Bali

The 2nd Bali Workshop on Music & Brain was held on January 10–12, 2025, at the Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center. Organized by the Tsinghua Laboratory of Brain and Intelligence and Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center, the event gathered experts in neuroscience, psychology, and music to explore the intersection of music and brain science. Around 60–80 participants attended each session, including academics, researchers, musicians, and policymakers from Indonesia, China, the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The workshop featured keynote speeches, panel discussions, and live performances, with contributions from Johns Hopkins University, Tsinghua University, and the Central Conservatory of Music. Discussions covered music perception, AI-driven analysis, and music therapy’s role in mental health and neurodevelopment. A highlight was the live performances, including a Gamelan orchestra, a piano recital by Xiangdong Kong, and demonstrations of East Asian instruments like the Guzheng. Notable attendees included H.E. Prof. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan and Cherie Nursalim. With its engaging discussions and cultural showcases, the workshop successfully fostered interdisciplinary collaboration, advancing research on music’s cognitive and therapeutic effects while strengthening cross-cultural connections.
