04 April 2023 – Cloud Lounge, UID Bali Campus

At the edge of Bali’s coastline, inside the serene Cloud Lounge of UID Bali Campus, a quiet but meaningful conversation unfolded on April 4, 2023. The Tsinghua SEA Partners Gathering brought together a small circle of 45 collaborators, innovators, and thinkers, each sharing a curiosity for how technology can serve not only progress—but also happiness.

With the theme “AI, Big Data, and Sustainable Design for Happiness,” the session explored the delicate balance between technology, environment, and human well-being. It was less about presentations and more about exchange—about slowing down to ask deeper questions in an era that rarely pauses to think.

Carlo Ratti, joining virtually from MIT as Director of the Senseable City Lab and Founder of Carlo Ratti Associati, offered a lens into the future of cities shaped by data and design. His reflections on how digital systems can make urban life more responsive and humane sparked new perspectives among participants, connecting global insights with regional realities.

The gathering—intimate, unhurried, and grounded in dialogue—was part of Tsinghua SEA’s effort to build an ecosystem of shared thinking. It’s within these spaces that ideas begin to intertwine: between academia and industry, innovation and empathy, progress and sustainability.

What emerged wasn’t a blueprint, but a sense of direction. That the pursuit of technological advancement, when guided by design and driven by purpose, can bring us closer not only to smarter cities—but to happier ones.
